A vacation on Isla
Holbox (pronounced "Hole-Bosh") is like
stepping back in time on an island
paradise. Still relatively undiscovered
for large-scale tourism, the island has
miles of white-sand beaches, only one
small village, 1,500 residents, only a
few ATM machines, and roads made of sand
for golf carts, bicycles and motor
bikes, which can be rented on the
island. Isla Holbox is 24 miles long and
1 mile wide, and is located about 40
miles NW of Cancun. The majority of the
residents of Holbox are fishermen who
pull in grouper, snook, red fish, sea
trout, rock fish, pompano, and lobster
from the Gulf of Mexico's nutrient-rich
waters. Holbox has now been designated
the top spot in the world to observe and
swim with the ocean's largest fish, the
gentle Whale Shark
