> Yucatan Haciendas |
|
For centuries the haciendas
dominated the economic and political landscape
of the Yucatan. The haciendas were part
of a land-grant scheme that the Spanish
crown began in the 16th century, as a way
to reward conquistadors, Spanish nobles
and others for their loyalty to the king.
Most haciendas were operated like small
cities, with the haciendas being self-sufficient
communities. They had churches and stores,
hospitals and schools. As many as 1,000
people who worked at the hacienda might
have lived on a single estate. Today, many
haciendas are now luxurious hotels and inns
that have been meticulously restored to
their former glory.
